What Even is Energy Healing? (And Why Your Dog Probably Gets It More Than Most Humans)

Spiritual healing without the woo-woo… but maybe a tail wag.
Think energy healing is just for “woo-woo” people? You know the stereotypical type who skinny dip in the moonlight or wear crystals close to their heart stuffed in the bra. Hey, if that’s your vibe – go for it! Otherwise keep your heart open and read on.
My definition of energy healing is the holistic practice of nurturing the body, mind and soul. It’s connecting with vibrational energy that flows through you, me and even your dog - or if you’re cat lover, them too. It’s how your dog (and cat) knows you’re feeling down so they snuggle close calming your emotions like furry therapist. It’s a walk in the woods calming your thoughts as you hear the birds singing and the river gently flowing over the pillow like rocks.
That’s energy healing. And it really works. Scientists are exploring the wonders of it, but our ancestors – and animals – have known it forever intuitively.
So, What Is Energy Healing Exactly?
Energy healing is the vibrating energy within all of us. We are not just made-up of muscle, cells, bones and everything that helps us breathe. When our energy gets stuck, blocked, or overwhelmed (hello social media doom-scrolls), our mental and physical health suffers.
The good news is there are healing practices to help clear out the blocks like Reiki, intuitive channeling, meditation and creative journaling. These practices tune-up your system reconnecting to its natural flow of harmony.
It’s kind of like energetic workout for your soul. Minus the dumbbells.
Why Your Dog Gets It More Than Most Humans
Dogs are masters of the moment. They don’t schedule squirrel-chasing or pencil in nap time—they just know when it’s time to rest, play, or zoomie. My golden retriever, Violet, has a special way of reminding me to unplug—like when she drops her slobbery ball at my feet after I’ve been glued to a screen for far too long. She's my living, breathing mindfulness coach with a wagging tail.
Animals tune into energy awareness much easier than humans. It’s amazing how therapy dogs know when someone is about to have a seizure. Or how dogs (or cats) know intuitively how to comfort when you’re upset. Their senses are wide open allowing to pick up on what feels important and essential.
Humans can get absorbed overanalyzing situations, avoiding activities, suppressing emotions. And it’s while we are distracted we miss the energetic signs in our body. Have you ever thought, “Hmm.. I’m just not feeling like myself.” That’s your intuition shining a light on possible burnout, feeling overwhelmed, or another challenging energy withdrawal.
It’s not just a daily downward dog keeping pups chill. They are tuned into their energetic flow. And you can too.
What does Energy Healing Feel like?
I love helping clients connect to their authentic self. Here are how some typically describe it:
A radiant warmth and/or a tingling in the body
Deep peace or calmness overcomes completely
Emotional release (yep, tears are healing too)
Feeling lighter or connected afterward
Energy Healing responds as you need it. As well a persons experience is unique as they are. Just trust your soul to tell you when it's received.
Is Energy Healing for you?
There’s nothing woo-woo about wanting to feel like yourself but a little soul searching helps to know if you're ready. So how do you know you are ready to explore a healing journey? The following is a gentle exercise to help figure it out. Find a quiet and comfy spot where you won't be disturbed. Once settled take a deep and slow belly breath in through the nose and out through the mouth ending with a big soul releasing sigh. The louder the better but if you're shy a whisper is fine too. Repeat 2 more times. Ready? Great! Now read the following observing your thoughts:
You’re not feeling like yourself but can’t figure out why
You’re sensitive and empathic to people and it’s overwhelming
You’re energy is easily drained when around people
You’re experiencing intense life changes or emotional trauma
You want to reconnect with your intuition and get clear on your journey
This self-reflection is to help you identify why you may feel off. It’s also the first step to energetic healing. You don’t have to understand all about healing energy in the beginning to benefit from it. Simply being open to the possibilities is all you need. And the more you practice, the more you’ll feel at peace.
